Vegetarians and Friends

Vegetarians & Friends invites you to our monthly potluck dinners!

Normally we gather for an informal potluck dinner the second Monday of each month to help each other find healthier eating options, to find ways to eat that is kinder to our planet and to have an enjoyable time together! But because New York is on PAUSE for awhile, Vegetarians & Friends has been meeting via Zoom.

We welcome a variety of “friends” to our dinners:

  • Some of us are following a vegan diet that includes only plants

  • Some are vegetarian and include dairy and eggs in our diet

  • Some of us are “flexitarian” and eat animal food infrequently

  • Some of us are confused by all the news on which diet is the best and we’re just trying out some new ideas!

Our diners bring a wide range of potluck dishes, from basic to fancy, comfort food to spicy, traditional recipes to international, main dishes, side dishes, desserts. There’s sure to be something to please each “friend.” We welcome whatever offerings you’d care to bring to the feast. (One of our friend’s schedule doesn’t allow him to cook, so he usually brings a healthy take-out dish.)

A word about eating in a way that is kinder to our planet.

In normal times, only fanatics would take on the task of asking people to change what they eat. But these are not normal times, and according to Project Drawdown, adopting a plant-rich diet is one of the ways individuals can make an important contribution to drawing down greenhouse gases -- a project we have to take seriously.

To quote Project Drawdown:

Plant-rich diets reduce emissions and also tend to be healthier, leading to lower rates of chronic disease. According to a 2016 study, business-as-usual emissions could be reduced by as much as 70 percent through adopting a vegan diet and 63 percent for a vegetarian diet, which includes cheese, milk, and eggs. $1 trillion in annual health-care costs and lost productivity would be saved.

In Warwick, we have many resources that can help people transition to more plant-rich diets. Many of us are blessed with full gardens and everyone has access to wonderful farmers markets and farm stands. Eating fresh produce from these sources is great for anyone’s diet.

Buying from local farmers is good for the local economy, so it’s kind of like taking money from your wallet and putting it in your back pocket
