November 2021

Wednesday November 17, 2021

Meeting chair: Bill Greene

We were joined by guests from Sustainable Hudson Valley: Ben Eckstein, Miaojun Pang, Chloe Rychcik, Dave Conover, Melissa Everett

Ben Eckstein, graduate student in Sustainable Communities and Public Administration at Binghamton University and Outreach Coordinator for Sustainable Hudson Valley was in Glasgow for a week during COP26. He walked us through the events he participated in and some of the things he learned. Viewers at home heard about the back and forth of negotiations, while Ben and others participated in seminars, met with other climate activists, and advocated for better policies.

Here’s a recording of Ben’s presentation and the discussion. (Thanks to Peter Hall for posting this to YouTube.)

Committee Updates

Book Club: The next Sustainable World Book Club meeting will be on December 14, 2021, at 3 PM. Members will discuss Under a White Sky: the Nature of the Future by Elizabeth Kolbert. (BookClub@sustainablewarwick.org)

Pollinators Pathway: Our newly forming Pollinators Pathway committee will meet next Monday evening (November 22); contact Bill Greene for more information. drwsg123@gmail.com

Climate Smart Communities: A couple representatives of Sustainable Warwick will meet with Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton to discuss Climate Smart Communities and whether Warwick will start a Climate Smart Communities Task Force.

Plastics: Julia Calderon expressed frustration at the Times Herald-Record advertising circulars being delivered in plastic bags and dropped at the end of driveways. Often residents don’t pick them up, and they are left sitting there days or weeks later. If you see someone dropping the circulars near your home, tell them you don’t want one and give it back to them.

Great Give Back: The Albert Wisner Public Library continues the Great Give Back program, where they collect items to ship to TerraCycle for recycling. Check out the details here. The products include:

  • Any kind of toothpaste tube or oral care product packaging

  • Any kind of razor blade or shaving product packaging

  • Makeup containers and packaging

December Celebration: Amid the ongoing pandemic, we are looking for alternatives to our traditional party in December. The current plan is to gather for a hike in December. Please reply to this email if you want to participate in the hike or have an alternative suggestion.
